GM Korea production should stabilise at 500 000 vehicles/year over the next years
- Following the sale of some of its subsidiaries (Opel and Vauxhall), the abandon of several markets (Europe, Russia, India, South Africa) and the continuing decline in the production volume of its Korean subsidiary (notably following the abandon of the European market), the GM group wanted to reassure GM Korea employees.
- The US manufacturer (now the world's fourth-largest carmaker) said it did not intend to stop its activities in South Korea, contrary to what was inferred by information circulated in the Korean media.
- In 2016, the GM Korea subsidiary produced 569,000 vehicles at its three sites in Pupyong, Changwon and Kunsan, compared with 598,000 units in 2015, 673,000 units in 2014, 768,000 units in 2013, 795,000 units in 2012 and 814,000 units units in 2011.
- This steady decline (-30% in five years) reflects a real disillusionment with the GM Korea models, which is mainly due to the abandon of the European Chevrolet brand (almost 200,000 sales a year), of which most of the models were manufactured in Korea.
- The stop of production of the Opel Antara (replaced by the Opel Grandland manufactured in France) and the gradual transfer of Opel Mokka's production to Europe should again impact GM Korea's manufacturing volume over the next few years. The volume of GM Korea is expected to fall to 500,000 vehicles per year over the next few years.
