The top 20 models imported in China in 2019
In 2019, the Chinese market represented 21,444,180 passenger cars (down 9.6% compared to 2018) and imports represented 1,111,811 units, or 5.2% of total registrations. The volume of imports is twice the volume of Chinese exports in 2019.

With SUVs accounting for 44% of the Chinese market in 2019, it is interesting to note that these models represent a larger share in imports. Indeed, SUVs account for 54% of total imports while sedans only represent 40%. The others are MPVs (4%) and coupés-convertibles (2%).

It is to be noted that of the first twenty models imported into China, thirteen are SUVs, while there are only seven sedans. On the other hand, the most imported car in China is by far the Lexus ES (premium version of the Toyota Camry E segment sedan) which alone accounts for 11% of total Chinese imports. It is produced in a plant located in the United States.

Vehicles imported into China are vehicles that come mostly from Premium brand models, produced either in Europe (48%), North America (27%) or Japan (19%). These Premium brands represent 80% of Chinese imports, including the Lexus (21% of imports), BMW (15% of imports), Mercedes (13% of imports), Porsche (8% of imports) and Audi (6% of imports). These five premium brands alone account for 63% of total Chinese imports.
