The Italian market is down 23.9% in 2021 compared to 2019
The Italian automotive market (passenger cars) remained at a very low level in 2021 compared to 2019 (-23.9%), a level which remains slightly higher than that of 2020 (+ 5.5%). In total, Italy registered 1,457,952 passenger cars last year, compared to 1,381,496 in 2020 and 1,916,320 in 2019. This is the lowest figure since 2014, after 2020.

The reasons given for this very low level of registrations in 2021 relate to the lack of supply of the semiconductors that automakers need to make their cars marketable.

But it could be that the sharp increase in the average price of cars as well as a wait-and-see attitude from customers on electric vehicles may slow down purchases and encourage potential customers to keep their vehicles longer.

The ranking by brand shows that Fiat remains largely in the lead in this market, with 223,567 units, ahead of Volkswagen (126,092 units), Toyota (84,850 units), Peugeot (84,263 units), Ford (80,989 units) and Renault. (74,544 units).

By groups, Stellantis is the Italien market leader in 2021 (549,775 units), ahead of Volkswagen (234,285 units), Renault-Nissan (167,379 units), Toyota (89,549 units) and Hyundai-Kia (88,892 units).

The best-selling models were the Fiat Panda (102,494 units), the Fiat 500 (45,138 units), the Lancia Ypsilon (41,527 units), the Jeep Renegade (33,177 units), the Toyota Yaris (31,167 units) and the Fiat 500X (29,898 units). Note that Italy is the only country in Europe where the Lancia Ypsilon is sold.
