VW will produce the Skoda Rapid in Russia in 2014

The Volkswagen Group has since 2007 a plant in Russia (Kaluga). This plant produces the VW Polo, VW Tiguan, VW Touareg and the Skoda Octavia, along with the Skoda Fabia and Skoda Yetiall these models are sold locally. The Kaluga plant produced 180,000 vehicles in 2012.

The Skoda Rapid will arrive on the Russian market in 2014. The lack of capacity of the Kaluga plant to manufacture it (capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year has already been greatly exceeded in 2012), a solution has been  found through its agreement with the Russian carmaker GAZ (which manufactures the Volga).

Volkswagen can now use the GAZ factory located in Nizhny Novgorod thathasn't produced anything since 2010 and has a capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year.

The group will then move the production of the Octavia from Kaluga to Nizhny Novgorod and the Skoda Rapid will be produced on the site of Kaluga. These transfers will be effective between autumn 2013 and spring 2014.

In 2012, Volkswagen sold 180,863 vehicles in Russia including 99,206 Polo, Tiguan and Touareg from Kaluga and over 81,657 vehicles from abroad. Skoda last year sold 99,062 vehicles in Russia including 80,348 Fabia, Octavia Yeti from Kalugaand over 18,714 from abroad.
