PSA's upcoming middle size pickup truck will be derived from the Toyota Hilux

The upcoming middle size pickup truck announced by the PSA group last month, to be sold under the Peugeot and Citroën brands, will be derived from the Toyota Hilux, which has been one of the best-selling pickup trucks since its inception in 1968.

This will be a third area of partnership between PSA and Toyota, following the partnership in segment A sedans (Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107/108, Citroën C1) which has been in place since 2005, and in which Toyota is the contractor, and the partnership concerning trucks (Toyota ProAce, Peugeot Expert, Citroën Jumpy) which has been in place since 2014, PSA being the contractor.

The category of middle size pickup trucks is attracting more and more manufacturers, as its “pioneers” Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Mazda, Isuzu, Ford and Chevrolet, are being followed by newcomers Fiat, Renault, Mercedes, Peugeot and Citroën. However, these newcomers prefer to work with the "pioneers" rather than creating a pickup truck entirely on their own.

Fiat created its pickup truck from the Mitsubishi L200, Renault and Mercedes created theirs from the Nissan Navara, and Peugeot and Citroën are going to create theirs from the Toyota Hilux, which has also recently been updated.

The market for middle size pickup trucks consists of 2 million vehicles annually, a number which should increase due to the broader range on offer. The Toyota Hilux alone has annual sales exceeding 600 000.
