- The Top 20 of global car production by group in 2015 can be examined in two different ways:
-1) According to the Western ranking, which lists car production at Chinese factories by Chinese assemblers under the production of each Western manufacturer. This ranking is the most widely used in the Western world.
-2) According to the Chinese ranking, which lists the production of each Western manufacturer at Chinese factories under the production of Chinese assemblers. This ranking is mostly used in China.
- The two rankings differ significantly, as the first one only contains only three Chinese manufacturer-assemblers (15th, 16th and 20th place), while the second contains six Chinese manufacturer-assemblers, figuring higher in the ranking, as is to be expected (7th, 10th, 11th, 14th, 17th and 20th place).
- In addition to this, Western manufacturers produce many vehicles in China which are at a disadvantage in the second ranking, as this production is listed under that of the Chinese assemblers. It is for this reason that Volkswagen is no longer second, but fifth and GM is no longer third, but fourth. However, Renault-Nissan is no longer fourth, but second and Hyundai-Kia is no longer fifth, but third. Toyota ranks first in both the rankings.
