Indian Automotive (PC+LCV) Market in 2016
- The Indian automotive market continued to grow in 2016 (+ 7.1% compared with 2015). This market reached 3.67 million units for the first time, and could reach or even surpass 4 million units in 2017.
- Many manufacturers saw their sales increase in 2016, with notable exceptions like Honda, Toyota, GM and FCA. Suzuki (Maruti-Suzuki) is still by far the leader in the Indian market, with a share of 38%. Its sales amounted to 1,395 million units, an increase of 8.2%, which is higher than the overall market increase, demonstrating that all of its models (segments A and B) are in line with local customer demand.
- The three next largest car makers - Hyundai-Kia (501,000 sales, + 5.2%), Tata (472,000 sales, + 5%) and Mahindra (416,000 sales, + 8.3%) – lag substantially behind . The fifth-largest, Renault-Nissan, recorded the strongest growth in the market (+ 96.2%), with 186,000 sales of which 106,000 Kwid (while the Tata Nano sold ten times less over same period).
- The top-selling models in the Indian market in 2016 were the Suzuki Alto (245,000 units), Suzuki Dzire (202,000), Suzuki Wagon R (173,000), Suzuki Swift (169,000), Hyundai Grand i10 ) And Hyundai i20 (122,000).
