The global top 20 producers of BEVs and PHEVs in 2022
Inovev has counted the top 20 carmakers of Battery Electric (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs) in the world in 2022.

In the BEV category, Tesla largely dominates its competitors, with a production volume of more than 1.35 million vehicles in 2022 compared to 930,000 in 2021 (+45%). But its market share has fallen from 21% to 19% in the BEV market as the competition has grown significantly. The total BEV market represented 7.28 million units in 2022 compared to 4.32 million units in 2021 (+69%). BYD is the second largest BEV carmaker, with 920,000 units produced in 2022 compared to 320,000 in 2021. The Chinese carmaker tripled its BEV sales last year. Next come the GM groups (680,000 units) thanks to Wuling, which alone accounts for 84% of the group's BEV sales, Volkswagen (520,000 units), Geely (360,000 units) and Renault-Nissan (340,000 units).

In the PHEV category, BYD largely dominates its competitors, with a volume of 940,000 units produced in 2022 against 270,000 in 2021. The Chinese carmaker tripled its PHEV sales last year. The Volkswagen (230,000 units), Geely (200,000), BMW (170,000) and Mercedes (160,000) groups follow.

If we combine BEVs and PHEVs, the leading carmaker is BYD with 1.86 million units produced in 2022, against 590,000 units in 2021. BYD is ahead of Tesla (1.35 million units), Volkswagen (750,000 units) and GM (690,000 units).
