Volvo XC40 voted Car of the Year 2018
- After the election of the Peugeot 3008 SUV in 2017, a SUV wins the Car of the Year award again in 2018, i.e. the Volvo XC40, which like the Peugeot 3008 is a C-segment SUV.
- The Volvo XC40 won the title with 325 points, ahead of the Seat Ibiza (242 points) and the BMW 5 Series (226 points). This is the first time the Volvo brand has won this title, and indirectly this is also a first time award for the Chinese OEM Geely, owner of Volvo Cars, and very dynamic in recent months.
- The XC40 is the second SUV to be awarded since the trophy was first awarded in 1964. The 58 journalists who elect the Car of the Year thus reflect the automotive market by awarding SUVs two years in a row, as these models currently represent one in three sales in most major markets. What's more, C-segment SUVs account for the majority of SUVs sold in Europe and China. Only the United States still buys larger SUVs, relegating these models to the D and E segments.
- Inovev has released an analysis for the Volvo XC40 (published on October 16, 2017). This SUV is the first Volvo model to use the CMA platform developed jointly by Volvo and Geely for all models in the C segment group. Inovev forcasts an annual volume of 50,000 XC40 manufactured in Gent, not counting the units that will be manufactured in China.
