Renault-Samsung stopped the production of SM5 and SM7
Renault's Korean subsidiary, known as Renault-Samsung, has just stopped the production of its SM5 (D-segment) and SM7 (E-segment) sedans. Sales of these two models had dropped significantly since the arrival of the SM6 sedan (which is the rebadged version of the Renault Talisman sold in Europe since 2014).

The current range of Renault-Samsung is now focused on the SM3 (C-segment) and SM6 (D-segment) sedans, as well as on the QM6 SUV (imported in Europe under the name Koleos).

The real handicap of the brand was to compete in a Korean market largely dominated by the Hyundai-Kia group which markets about thirty different models, with a wide choice of thermal, hybrid and electric engines, when Renault-Samsung has an extremely reduced range of models and engines.

Moreover, Renault-Samsung didn’t succeed to export massively, especially after 2014. Only the Koleos is exported to Europe but to less than 20 000 units only each year.

As Hyundai-Kia's domination of the Korean market grows year by year, even putting in danger the survival of a carmaker as GM Korea (formerly Daewoo), the Renault-Samsung brand sees its share of the market crumble from year to year.

After trying to establish itself in the Premium market, Renault-Samsung sees its ambitions reduced to nothing since the launch by the Hyundai-Kia group of the luxury brand Genesis which is taking over this market in Korea.
