BEV and PHEV production in Europe in 2020 and 3 months 2021 by model
Of the 1,113,099 xEVs (BEV + PHEV + HEV) produced in Europe in 2020, 479,171 are BEVs, 441,305 PHEVs and 192,623 HEVs. In the first quarter of 2021, there were 330,212 xEVs (up 63% over the same period in 2020), including 129,148 BEVs, 152,720 PHEVs and 48,344 HEVs.

What are the most produced models in each of these categories?
• In the BEV category:
In 2020, the Renault Zoé far outstripped all its competitors, but in the first quarter of 2021, it was followed by the Volkswagen ID3, due to the rapid ramp-up of the German model, as well as competition from the Twingo ZE, Hyundai Kona BEV and Peugeot e-208 which take customers to the Zoe. It is to be noted that the Hyundai Kona BEV is now more produced than the Nissan Leaf in Europe.
• In the PHEV category:
The BMW 3 Series remains the leader of PHEV models produced in Europe, but SUVs hold strong positions in this market, such as the Volvo XC40, Ford Kuga, Peugeot 3008, Volvo XC60, Mercedes GLC, BMW X1. Consequently, the VW Passat loses much of its influence, but the VW Golf on the other hand resists (while the electric Golf naturally collapses in favour of the ID3).
• In the HEV category:
Toyota crushes all its competitors in this category, with 90% of HEV production in Europe, represented by the Corolla and Yaris. However, it is to noted that the HEV category is the only xEV to decline in 2021 compared to 2020.
