The breakdown of global sales of BEV, PHEV and HEV-Full in 2021
The global market for cars with alternative engines represented 9.3 million vehicles in 2021, or nearly 12% of the total for all engines. All-electric cars (BEV) accounted for 4,548,627 units, of which 2,751,755 were sold in China, 1,176,280 in Europe, 490,298 in the United States, 18,555 in Japan, 42,276 in South Korea and 69,463 in the rest of the world.

Plug-in hybrid cars (PHEV) represented 1,780,162 units including 597,752 in China, 961,756 in Europe, 176,292 in the United States, 24,202 in Japan, 17,405 in South Korea and 2,755 in the rest of the world.

Non-rechargeable hybrid cars (HEV-Full) represented 2,971,308 units including 515,705 units in China, 646,604 in Europe, 801,895 in the United States, 857,540 in Japan, 38,747 in South Korea and 110,817 in the rest of the world.

China therefore registered 3,865,212 cars with alternative engines (i.e. 18% of the Chinese market), Europe 2,784,640 units (i.e. 24% of the European market), the United States 1,468,485 units (i.e. 12% of the American market), Japan 900,297 units (24% of the Japanese market) and South Korea 98,428 units (i.e. 7% of the Korean market).

BEVs represent 13% of the Chinese market, 10% of the European market, 4% of the American market and 0.5% of the Japanese market. PHEVs represent 3% of the Chinese market, 8% of the European market, 1% of the American market and 0.5% of the Japanese market. HEV-Full represent 2% of the Chinese market, 6% of the European market, 7% of the American market and 23% of the Japanese market. BEVs are therefore mainly sold in China, PHEVs in Europe, HEV-Fulls in the United States and Japan.
