The Tesla Model Y is the most produced and the best selling BEV in Europe in 2023
Compared to a European market (registrations 29 countries = EU + UK + EFTA) of 2 million BEVs in 2023, representing a market share of 16%, the production volume of BEVs reached 1.7 million units last year, the majority of which being delivered in Europe.

Production: the most produced BEV in Europe in 2023 is the Tesla Model Y (193,000 units) ahead of the Audi Q4 E-Tron (106,000 units) which exceeds the Volkswagen ID4 (85,000 units) and Skoda Enyaq (82 000 units). The Fiat 500e (73,000 units) is the fifth most produced BEV in Europe despite its small size. It is ahead of the Volkswagen ID3 (72,000 units) which was supposed to become the most produced electric car. The premium models BMW i4 (64,000 units) and Audi Q8 E-Tron (57,000 units) achieved excellent performances in seventh and eighth position, even ahead of the Renault Mégane (55,000 units), Cupra Born (54,000 units), Peugeot 208 (47,000 units) and Mini E (42,000 units).

Sales: the best-selling BEV in Europe in 2023 is the Tesla Model Y (243,000 units) of which 50,000 still come from China, ahead of the Tesla Model 3 (96,000 units) which is entirely imported from China. These two Tesla models are ahead of the Volkswagen ID4 (78,000 units) and Skoda Enyaq (76,000 units) produced in Europe. In fifth position, the MG 4 (71,000 units) which comes from China, ahead of the Audi Q4 E-Tron (67,000 units), Fiat 500e (63,000 units) and Volkswagen ID3 (60,000 units) produced in Europe. Followed by the Dacia Spring (51,000 units) produced in China, Peugeot 208 (47,000 units), Volvo XC40 (44,000 units), BMW i4 (44,000 units), Cupra Born (43,000 units) and Renault Mégane (42,000 units).
Paris Motorshow 2022 - The French brands: Renault-Nissan
The Renault-Nissan group will display three battery electric concept cars (BEV) which will give birth in 2024 to the battery electrics Renault 4 (produced in Maubeuge), Renault 5 (produced in Douai) and Renault Scénic (produced in Douay). These three models will complete the range of battery electric cars from the diamond brand, such as the electric Renault Mégane e-tech and the electric Renault Kangoo, without forgetting the electric Trafic and electric Master utility vehicles.
We know that the Renault Zoéproduced in Flins will be discontinued in 2024, when the Renault 4 electric and Renault 5 electric will be launched. The Flinsplant will stop the vehicle assembly activity at this time.
These seven electric models (R4, R5, Megane e-tech, Scenic, Kangoo, Trafic, Master) are supposed to represent a production volume of 700,000 units in France in 2030 according to the carmaker.
The Renault-Nissan group will also exhibit a small urban vehicle, the Duo, under the Mobilize brand, which succeeds to the Renault Twizy, but in a slightly more robust and more habitable form.
The Renault-Nissan group will also exhibit the battery electric version of the Alpine A110 (E-ternity) which prefigures the sports coupe with electric motor to be launched in 2026, shortly after a compact SUV also battery electric.
Finally, the Renault-Nissan group will exhibit the facelifted Dacia range. This brand is experiencing an increasingly strong influence on the European market (4.3% market share in 2022 compared to 5% for Renault).

Germany produced 35% of the xEVs made in Europe in 2023
European countries (EU + UK + EFTA) produced 3,455,337 xEVs (BEV + PHEV + HEV) in 2023, compared to 2,418,313 in 2022, representing an increase of 43% in one year, a growth that accelerates because the increase observed in 2022 compared to 2021 did not exceed 20%.

Among these xEVs produced in Europe in 2023, there were 1,718,674 BEVs (+53% compared to 2022), 1,028,363 PHEVs (+39%) and 708,300 HEVs (+28%). In this category, Germany produces 35% of xEVs produced in Europe in 2023.

In the BEV category, Germany takes a considerable lead over other countries, with nearly 900,000 vehicles produced with three very involved carmakers (Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes) which concentrate the majority of their BEV production there and Tesla, which produced nearly 200,000 Model Ys there last year. Far behind Germany, France (165,000 units) and Spain (155,000 units) are neck and neck.

In the PHEV category, Germany is well ahead of other countries, with 333,000 vehicles produced, while Spain not exceeding 125,000 vehicles produced.

In the HEV category, France remains the leading producing country thanks to Toyota which accounts for the majority of the 255,000 vehicles produced in the country, ahead of the United Kingdom (180,000 units) mainly represented by Toyota.
Germany produced 5 times more BEVs than France or Spain in 2023
Germany produced nearly 900,000 BEVs (battery electric vehicles) in 2023, or 17% of its automobile production volume (passenger cars and light utility vehicles) and 5 times more than France or Spain over the same period.

The lead taken by Germany is explained above all by the ramp-up of Tesla, which produces the Model Y near Berlin, to nearly 200,000 units in 2023 and by the number of models produced in the country (around twenty compared to a dozen in France).

But in addition, we note the concentration in Germany of the BEVs production from the Volkswagen group (ID3, ID4, ID5, ID7, ID Buzz, Q4 E-Tron, Taycan, E-Tron GT) which represent more than 440,000 units last year, representing almost half of all BEVs produced in Germany in 2023. BMW also concentrates the production of its BEVs in Germany (i4, i5, i7, iX, iX1, iX2) which represent more than 150,000 units last year. The same for Mercedes (EQA, EQC, EQE, EQS, e-Sprinter) with BEVs represented more than 100,000 units last year. The battery electric version of the Opel Astra is also produced in Germany (around 5,000 units in 2023).

France and Spain only produce a dozen BEVs each, with production volumes often very low. Renault only produced less than 100,000 BEVs last year in France, including the Nissan Townstar and Mercedes EQT produced in Renault plants. The Zoé is at the end of its life and the Scénic E-Tech is barely starting. Renault will thus produce 60% of the BEVs produced in France in 2023. The Renault 5 E-Tech, Scénic E-Tech and Trafic ZE will try to boost BEV production in France. Stellantis only produced less than 50,000 BEVs in France last year (30% of BEVs produced in France in 2023). Smart will cease production in spring 2024. In Spain, the most produced models are the Opel Corsa and Peugeot 208 which have not yet reached 30,000 units in 2023.
Chrysler has produced 15 million MPVs since 1983
The differentiation between a MPV and an SUV is quite difficult to define, because it encompasses several differences which, taken one by one, do not allow the two categories of vehicles to be differentiated, but which taken together do. The differentiation of sedan vs MPV and MPV vs SUV is in reality a marketing concept.

The former Chrysler group, now part of the Stellantis consortium, was the true pioneer of MPVs in 1983, a few months before the Renault Espace based on a Matra project which had been refused by the management of the PSA Peugeot-Citroën group.Today, Chrysler is one of the few non-Asian carmakers to still believe in this type of family vehicle which has practically disappeared from the North American and European markets due to the massive arrival of SUVs. These SUVs seem to better meet the demand of customers on these markets.

Since 2016, Chrysler has continued to market the Pacifica MPV, which is the direct heir of the old Plymouth Voyager, Chrysler Voyager and Dodge Caravan MPVs marketed between 1983 and 2020. Since 1983, Chrysler has produced 15 million MPVs, making it the largest MPV producer in history.

The MPV market developed in the United States from the models marketed by Chrysler, from the mid-1980s, helped by the new models of Ford and GM. The MPV market represented up to 1.3 million units in this region during the best years, before collapsing in the 2010s, due to the massive arrival of SUVs. In 2023, only 300,000 MPVs were sold in the USA. In Europe (EU + UK + EFTA), the MPV market represented up to 2.3 million units in 2006 (thanks to the launch of compact MPVs like the Renault Scénic) before collapsing with the arrival of SUV. In 2023, only 200,000 MPVs were sold in Europe.
