Renault and Nissan are going to increase their capacity in India
- Renault and Nissan plan to increase by a third the capacity of their joint Chennai plant in India in the second half of 2013, increasing from 360,000 units per year to 480,000, as from September.
- This project is part of the strategy of these two carmakers to make India a a global manufacturing platform and to exploit the potential demand in the market and for export.
- In 2012, Renault-Nissan Chennai plant produced 180,000 vehicles (Micra, Sunny, Duster, Fluence and Koleos NV200), against 130,000 in 2011 and 40,000 in 2010, the date it opened. It is still far from the demand of 480,000 vehicles per year, but the direction of Renault-Nissan plans in the long term such growth.
- Exports accounted for almost half of the total production of the site last year, nearly 90,000 vehicles, mainly the Micra exported to Europe. 60,000 were sold in 2012 on this continent.
- In addition, since the 1st January 2013, the Duster and Sandero sold in Britain also come from the Chennai plant. The production of the Sandero started earlier this year.
