BMW will launch its first compact MPV by 2014
- If compact minivan general brands saw their sales decline for several years, premium brands saw their sales grow, like the Mercedes B-Class, which had sold 160,000 copies in 2012 against 80,000 in 2011. BMW and Audi therefore prepare their own compact MPV to respond to Mercedes B-Class
- BMW will launch by 2014 its first compact minivan, named Family Tourer. This model will be able to accommodate up to 7 passengers (like a Renault Grand Scenic or Citroen Grand Picasso) and borrow the platform of the future recreational vehicle X1 launched in 2015.
- The Family Tourer will be the first BMW model to have a front-wheel drive architecture and not driven by rear well drive or all-wheel drive. Today only the Mini from the BMW Group is equipped with front wheel drive.
- In addition to the Family Tourer launched in 2014 and the future X1 launched in 2015, BMW plans to launch an X2 Coupe (derived from the 1st Series ) by 2014 and an alternative trunk sedan of the 1st Series in 2015 (competitor of the Audi A3 Sedan and Mercedes CLA).
- The new generation of the 1st Series is scheduled for 2018 (in a 5-door version) and 2019 (in a 3-door version), the current 1-Series dating back from 2011.
