BMW will launch its first compact MPV by 2014

If compact minivan general brands saw their sales decline for several years, premium brands saw their sales grow, like the Mercedes B-Class, which had sold 160,000 copies in 2012 against 80,000 in 2011. BMW and Audi therefore prepare their own compact MPV to respond to Mercedes B-Class

BMW will launch by 2014 its first compact minivan, named Family Tourer. This model will be able to accommodate up to 7 passengers (like a Renault Grand Scenic or Citroen Grand Picasso) and borrow the platform of the future recreational vehicle X1 launched in 2015.

The Family Tourer will be the first BMW model to have a front-wheel drive architecture and not driven by rear well drive or all-wheel drive. Today only the Mini from the BMW Group is equipped with front wheel drive.

In addition to the Family Tourer launched in 2014 and the future X1 launched in 2015, BMW plans to launch an X2 Coupe (derived from the 1st Series ) by 2014 and an alternative trunk sedan of the  1st Series in 2015 (competitor of the Audi A3 Sedan and Mercedes CLA).

The new generation of the 1st Series is scheduled for 2018 (in a 5-door version) and 2019 (in a 3-door version), the current 1-Series dating back from 2011.
