The hierarchy of automobile car producing countries has been turned upside between 2002 and 2013.

The country with the highest decline during this period was France. Due to various offshoring to lower-cost countries, models at the end of their life span (Laguna Area), the deleting of premium models (Vel Satis, 607, C6) and less successful minivans (Scenic) against compact SUVs, automobile production in France has fallen in recent years. As result, from the 4th place worldwide in 2002 as a producer, France went to 12th place in 2012 and even went down to 13th place in 2013.

Spain was behind France in 2002 (1 000 000 vehicles apart) and overtook France in 2013. This country has nevertheless declined significantly since 2002 (from 7th to 11th place). Britain in 2013 is just behind France (100,000 units apart over 6 months), whereas in 2002 it produced half as many vehicles.

Russia, Canada and Thailand, formerly behind France, are now leading. Thailand thus produced three times fewer cars than France in 2002 and is well ahead in 2013.

The countries of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) that occupied the 5th, 11th, 13th and 15th places in 2002 occupied in 2013 the 1st, 6th, 7th, 12th places. While France's was beyond all four of them in 2002, they are now ahead in 2013.
