- Malaysia’s product development regarding the launches of EEV-compliant (Energy Efficient Vehicle) models is growing very rapidly starting with the release of the first Perodua model, the Axia, in September 2014. The EEV program covers all vehicle models regardless of engine displacement; therefore, a wide range of passengers cars are expected to be launched from small to medium/large size.
- It is highly possible that the fully-remodeled Toyota Viva, which is scheduled to be launched at the end of 2014, will be EEV-compliant as well. In addition, Proton plans to release the volume-selling Saga’s fully remodeled version in 2015, adding an EV model to its lineup. Toyota also announced the launch of the locally-produced Camry Hybrid at the end of 2014.
- The national carmaker Proton is speeding up the launch of global strategic models, small SUVs and other products. A small SUV based on the Iriz called the Irox will be released in 2015.
- Looking at small SUVs, Honda is expected to launch the HR-V and Perodua is forecasted to release a new model based on the next-gen Terios within the next 1-2 years, possibly leading to increased market competition.
