SOP of PC in Thailand between 2015 and 2017
- Thailand’s vehicle market is expected to see an increase in small vehicle launches through to around 2017 before the beginning of the country’s Eco-car Phase Two program. While the program puts forth stricter overall emission of carbon dioxide and fuel efficiency goals, commodity tax rate is lowered from the current 17% to 14% which is expected to trigger market recovery. In the Eco-car Phase Two program, members of the phase One program (Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Suzuki) as well as new players such (GM, Mazda, Ford, VW and China’s SAIC) are planning to take part.
- The number of participants is expected to increase from 5 to 10. As part of the phase One program, Honda, Mitsubishi and Nissan launched hatchback and sedan models, while Toyota and Suzuki released only hatchbacks. Toyota launched the fully-remodeled Yaris as an Eco-car in October 2013 followed by Suzuki’s Celerio in May 2014. Mazda plans to release the Eco-car program-compliant news Mazda2 in 2016. Ford plans to release an Eco-car model between 2016 and 2019, possibly the next-gen Fiesta or Ka (full remodeling is expected in 2015 in Europe and India).
- GM’s Eco-car model is most likely to be the Spark (full remodeling is scheduled in 2015 in Korea) or the Sonic. Although no details are available, VW is preparing to set up a plant in Thailand, while China’s SAIC make also plans to release an Eco-car model. As for the existing members of the program, Nissan and Honda intend to launch fully-remodeled products namely the March and Brio in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
- Before the introduction of a new tax system starting in January 2016, 1-ton pickup trucks are launched one after another. The Triton-based Pajero Sport SUV is planned to be fully remodeled in 2015. Mazda plans to launch the BT-50 with partially-remodeled engine in 2015. Toyota plans to release the fully-remodeled version of the IMV series Hilux Vigo and Fortuner in 2015.
