Hyundai to establish a third plant in India

Currently, the Korean carmaker Hyundai has two plants in India located in Chennai, each of which has a production capacity of 300 000 vehicles per year, 600 000 in total, for a production volume of 610 000 units in 2014.

The carmaker plans to produce 640 000 vehicles in India in 2015 (+ 5%) and in view of the expected growth of the Indian market over the next few years, has announced plans to create a third plant in the country (with a capacity of 300 000 vehicles a year), but not necessarily located in Chennai.

Hyundai will then have a capacity of 900 000 vehicles per year, allowing it to consolidate his second place in terms of carmakers in India (Maruti-Suzuki behind). The carmaker said that out of the 640 000 vehicles that were produced in India in 2015, 470 000 will be sold on the local market and 170 000 will be exported.

The models currently produced by Hyundai in India are: In segment A, the Santro which is the entry-level model resulting from the former Atos. It will be removed this summer after a five year life cycle. The Aeon is the model that has gradually replaced the Santro. Also in the A segment, the i10 and long Grand i10 models are positioned just above the Aeon. The Xcent is a 4-door version of the Grand i10. In segment B, we have the i20 (formerly Getz) and the compact car from segment C, the Accent. Finally, Elantra (C segment) and Sonata (D segment) , are distributed in small quantities.
