The Chinese carmaker BYD ( "Build Your Dreams") is historically a Chinese battery manufacturer based in Shenzhen, Guangdong. The company has diversified into the automobile in 2003, when the manufacturer BYD bought Tsinchuan Automobile Company, located in Xian, and then on the verge of bankruptcy.

BYD was the 22nd World manufacturer in 2015, with a volume of 442,000 vehicles sold (+ 1.8% compared to 2014), including 62,000 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles)  and PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles).
