Hyundai has started its car production in Algeria

Following the quotas for imports of new vehicles imposed by the Algerian government, several car manufacturers decided to produce vehicles directly on the spot for the Algerian market.

These quotas limit imports to 152 000 vehicles per year, of which 67 000 passenger cars and 85 000 light commercial vehicles, while the market represented up to 437 000 imports in 2012.

Renault already produces between 40,000 and 50,000 vehicles per year in Oran (with a capacity of 100,000 per year at term) and Volkswagen will produce between 30,000 and 50,000 vehicles a year at Relizane from 2017 (with a capacity of 100 000 per year at term). The models concerned are the Renault Logan and Sandero, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Octavia.

Hyundai started production of SUV Santa Fe in Tiaret (plant belonging to the Algerian group Tahkout) on 29 October 2016. In 2017, four models will come out of the assembly lines of this plant of 50,000 vehicles per year (with a capacity of 100,000 per year at term): these are the Hyundai i10 (segment A saloon), Hyundai Accent Sedan segment B), Elantra (sedan segment C) and Santa Fe (SUV segment D).

Hyundai sold 39,000 cars in Algeria in 2014 and 31,000 in 2015. The Korean could thus produce between 30,000 and 50,000 vehicles a year in Tiaret before reaching 100,000 vehicles a year by 2022.
