VW Golf, Passat and Audi A3 declined in 2016
- Volkswagen Golf, Passat and Audi A3 declined by 9.6%, 11.5% and 4.7%, respectively, in a European market (Europe 29 countries: EU - Malta + Norway + Swiss) of passenger cars, which rose by 6.5% in 2016.
- Three assumptions can be advanced:
• The disaffection of consumers for sedans for the benefit of SUVs, as shown by the statistics of recent years. But in the same market segment as the Golf and A3 (C-segment sedan), the Opel Astra increases its sales by 27.6%, the Renault Mégane by 13.4%, the Mercedes Class A 17.7 %.
• The life cycle of the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3. But these two vehicles were both launched in 2012 and therefore should not be replaced before the end of 2018.
• The Volkswagen diesel cheating case.
This case would have had a small but real impact on the European sales of the brand and the Volkswagen group (-0.4% of sales for the brand and + 3.3% for the group). The Volkswagen brand is one of the few to decrease in Europe in 2016, during a period when the European market is flourishing, and Volkswagen has launched two new high-volume models, the Tiguan and the Touran. Only these models have progressed in 2016, at Volkswagen.
