BEV production in Europe in 2020 and 3 months 2021 by country and by carmaker
Inovev calculated the production of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and full hybrids (HEVs) in Europe in 2020 and 2021. In 2020, European production of xEVs (BEV + PHEV + HEV) reached 1,113 099 units, including 479,171 BEVs, 441,305 PHEVs and 192,623 HEVs, out of a total of 12,971,724 light vehicles (passenger cars + utility vehicles) all engines combined, i.e. a share of 8.6%. Germany is the top producer of xEVs in 2020 (363,307 vehicles), ahead of France (238,280) and Great Britain (154,018).

In the first quarter of 2021, the European production of xEVs (BEV + PHEV + HEV) reached 330,212 units (up 63% over 2020), including 129,148 BEV, 152,720 PHEV and 48,344 HEV. In Q1-2021, no change in the country ranking, Germany produced 102,555 xEVs, France 56,017 and Great Britain 43,287.

In the first quarter of 2021, the BEV production increased by 67% compared to the same period in 2020 but it was PHEVs that experienced the strongest growth (+ 104%), this category of vehicles gradually replacing diesel vehicles. Only the production of HEV has decreased (-3%). It is to be noted that in the same period, the European production of light vehicles, all engines combined increased by 4%. The share of xEVs in this total represents 9.2% against 5,9% in Q1-2020. However, the comparison with the first quarter of 2020 is not relevant due to the numerous plant closures from March 15, 2020.

The VW group is the leader in the production of xEVs in Europe, with 232,231 units produced in 2020 and 79,674 in the first four months of 2021, ahead of Toyota (184,032 in 2020), Renault-Nissan (151,041), Daimler (138,513) , Stellantis (112 204) and BMW (111 072).
