Tesla sold 1.81 million electric vehicles worldwide in 2023
The American BEVs producer, Tesla, sold 1,810,000 units worldwide in 2023, including 831,000 in China, 615,000 in the United States and 363,000 in Europe. Tesla's global sales increased by 38% compared to 2022. This sales volume can be compared with Tesla's production volume which reached 1,845,985 vehicles worldwide in 2023. Tesla thus remains the leading producer of battery electric vehicles in the world in 2023, ahead of the BYD group which sold 1.57 million units last year, but the gap between the two carmakers is narrowing from year to year. The BYD group even sold more BEVs than Tesla in the fourth quarter of 2023 (526,000 units compared to 485,000 for Tesla). It is therefore likely that the BYD group, which has captured 25% of the BEV market in China in just a few years (thanks to extensive range development), will become the world's leading carmaker of BEVs in 2024.

To remain leader in the electric market, Tesla is counting on the launch in 2025 of its C-segment Model 2, the price of which could be between 25,000 and 35,000 euros depending on the version, i.e. a very competitive price compared to other C segment BEVs (a Volkswagen ID3 is marketed at between 43,000 and 50,000 euros depending on the version, a Renault Mégane E-Tech between 38,000 and 45,000 euros).

Also, BYD also produces and markets plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), which is not the case for Tesla. These plug-in hybrids represent a volume of 1.44 million vehicles in 2023. All engines combined, the BYD group therefore sold 3.01 million vehicles in 2023, which represents an increase of 62% compared to 2022.
