MG (SAIC) will produce cars in Spain from 2028
The Chinese brand MG (acquired from the British in 2005), which is part of the Chinese group SAIC, has seen its sales in 30 European countries (EU + UK + Switzerland + Norway) increase substantially since 2020. These have risen from 22,000 units in 2020 to 51,000 in 2021, 111,000 in 2022, 229,000 in 2023, 245,000 in 2024 and 306,000 in 2025. The year 2026 marks further progress, with 110,000 cars sold between January and April, representing a potential of 330,000 sales for the whole year.

The MG brand is now in the same situation as other Chinese carmakers , namely finding the best way to avoid the surtaxes applied in Europe to cars imported from China and to meet the possible future requirements of the "local content" being developed at the European Commission.

Rather than producing outside of China or in Europe with another carmaker, MG has chosen to build its own assembly plant in the European Union. This plant will be located in northwestern Spain, in A Coruña (Galicia), and will have an initial production capacity of 120,000 vehicles per year when it begins assembly operations in 2028 , a figure that could be doubled in the medium term. It's worth noting that MG's ambitions seem modest given the brand's current sales volume, which is only expected to increase over the next five years. Therefore, the carmaker could decide within the next year or two to build another assembly plant in Europe, allowing it to completely avoid importing its vehicles from China.

The SAIC group is thus following the policy of its Chinese competitors who are establishing themselves in large numbers on European territory.
