Inovev expects production of 35,000 Mercedes CLS/ year
- Mercedes unveiled the third generation of the CLS (the previous one was from 2011) which is situated between the E-Class and the S-Classis in the manufacturer's range. Presented as a 4-door coupé, like the first two generations, this model remains in reality a low-profile 4-door sedan, competing with the Audi A7 Sportback and BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé. The new generation of the Mercedes CLS is also even launched just a few weeks after the Audi A7 Sportback.
- The new CLS will try to boost sales of this family of models that peaked in 2005 (first generation), with a peak production of 53,000 units, but then experienced a clear disaffection (30,000 units in 2014, 20 000 units in 2017), due to the decline in sports-oriented sedans (the Audi A7 and BMW 6 Series are experiencing the same trend), confronted with the SUVs that are attracting more sales, and the traditional sedans that have recently been renewed (Mercedes E-Class, BMW Series 5).
- That's why the mission of the new CLS is difficult, especially as an AMG GT sedan is also about to be launched, which could weaken its position. Inovev expects a production of 30,000 to 35,000 units per year for this new CLS. The engines proposed are the following: 6-cylinder gasoline 3.0 367hp , 6-cylinder 3.0 diesel 340hp and 6-cylinder3.0 diesel 258hp. Other smaller engines will be available from 2019.
