Inovev forecasts 20,000 Kona Electric per year
Hyundai intends to be present in all markets. After its hybrid vehicles (Ioniq, Sonata) and fuel cell (ix35 and Nexo), the Korean brand is attacking the market for 100% electric vehicles with the Kona Electric B segment SUV. Derived from the thermal Kona which has been on the market for several months, the Kona Electric will offer two different engines:

1. a basic version with a 136hp electric motor powered by a battery of 39.2 kWh, for an announced range of 312 km (NEDC).
2. a more upscale version with a 204hp motor powered by a battery of 64 kWh, for a range of 482 km (NEDC).

These engines are more powerful than that used on the Kia Soul (another segment B SUV) whose power does not exceed 110hp. The Hyundai Kona Electric will be produced in the Korean factory of Ulsan and will be marketed from summer 2018 in Europe. Inovev expects 20,000 units per year, while 100,000 units are expected for the Kona Thermal.

In 2017, the Hyundai Kona Thermal has sold 7,000 units in Europe ( 3 months of sales ) and 23,000 units in Korea (6 months of sales ), for a total of 30,000 units. The figures for January 2018 are in line with Inovev forecasts: 4,500 in Europe and 3,500 in Korea, i.e. the equivalent of  96,000 units for the whole year.
