BMW and Jaguar Land Rover to collaborate in the electric sector
- BMW and Jaguar Land Rover have announced that they will jointly develop a new generation of electric motors and components for electric motors, in order to bring advanced vehicles and technologies to market faster, while achieving significant economies of scale.
- BMW currently markets several electric models (i3, i8, iX3) and will launch new ones from next year, such as the i4 and Mini E. In addition, BMW markets several plug-in hybrid models (Series 2, Series 3, Series 5, Series 7, X5, Mini Countryman). All these models totaled 140,000 units in 2018, 6% of BMW worldwide sales.
- For its part, Jaguar Land Rover markets the electric I-Pace, as well as several plug-in hybrid models (Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque). All these models totaled 7,500 units in 2018, or 1.5% of JLR worldwide sales, but 2019 promises to be a much better year thanks to the ramp-up of the Jaguar I-Pace and Range Rover Evoque PHEV. Tata Motors' UK subsidiary is expected to reach 20,000 BEV+PHEV sales in 2019.
- This collaboration between BMW and Jaguar Land Rover creates a link between the two manufacturers that could grow in the coming years. Indeed, we know that Tata Motors' British subsidiary is in financial difficulties and that the PSA group is in the queue to acquire it. BMW, which already owns the British brands Mini and Rolls-Royce, could thus overtake PSA to acquire these two additional British brands, Jaguar and Land Rover.
