Toyota sold 1,2 million non-rechargeable hybrids (HEV) in the world in 2016
Pioneer in the field of non-rechargeable hybrid vehicles (HEV) since 1997, the Toyota Group (Toyota and Lexus) crossed the 200,000 annual sales mark eight years later, in 2005, and 400,000 annual sales in 2007. The 1,200,000 annual sales level was reached in 2012. From 2012 to 2016, annual sales have stabilized at this level.

This stabilization of global Toyota hybrid sales can be explained by the fact that competition has increased considerably, not only for non-rechargeable hybrid vehicles but also for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV).
In addition, in the US, sales of Toyota
non-rechargeable hybrids suffered from the fall in oil prices which favored sales of thermal vehicles, including SUVs and pick-ups.
Inovev expects a revival of non-rechargeable hybrid Toyota sales over the next four years, notably due to the expansion of its range of vehicles (RAV4, CHR), and the ramp up of the new Prius even though competition will continue to grow around the world.

Inovev expects 1.4 million Toyota Hybrid and Lexus Hybrid sales in 2020.
