Global car ownership rates by region in 2017
Developed countries continue to have the highest rates of motorization (number of vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants), but the demographic impact of some developing countries is growing. According to the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA), car ownership rates are now 660 per 1,000 inhabitants in North America, 570 per 1,000 in the European Union, 550 per 1,000 in  Japan, Australia, and South Korea, 280 per 1,000 in Russia and Turkey, 180 per 1,000 in South America, 150 per 1000 in China, 80 per 1,000 in India, and 45 per 1,000  in Africa.

While the number of vehicles is declining in the United States, it continues to grow in Europe. But the Chinese park is progressing faster. China's car ownership rate only has to reach 180 per 1,000 inhabitants (which should happen around 2021) for the number of vehicles in its car fleet to be equal to that of the European fleet.

Individual car ownership, even if it is a legitimate aspiration, is nonetheless problematic. First of all, oil resources, which are the basis of automotive society, are limited and will not be enough to supply the growing world car fleet over the next 50 years. Also, the combustion of this oil causes the emission of carbon dioxide which contributes strongly to pollution and global warming of the planet.
