Ford will produce an electric light utility vehicle in Craiova (Romania) from 2024
The American carmaker Ford has announced that it will produce a 100% electric light commercial vehicle at its Romanian plant in Craiova from 2024. It will be preceded in 2023 by its combustion engine version (probably diesel) which will succeed to the Transit Connect van whose origins date back to 2003 for the first generation and 2013 for the second generation. Actually, every ten years, the Transit Connect is renewed, and the future generation will be available for the first time in thermal and electric engines.

Today, the Craiova plant assembles B-segment SUVs - Ecosport (end of life) and Puma - while Transit Connect is produced today at Ford's Spanish plant, in Valencia. It was initially planned to transfer the production of Transit Connect from Spain to the United States which is one of its biggest markets, but ultimately the transfer of production to Romania was chosen. This Romanian plant has a production capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year.

The Romanian Craiova plant will be Ford's third European site to produce a 100% electric vehicle, following the carmaker’s announcement to produce electric vehicles in Cologne (Germany) and Kocaeli (Turkey) plants.

Ford, however, is still far from the production capacities of Volkswagen, which intends to turn Zwickau, Dresden and Martorell into plants capable of producing several hundred thousand electric vehicles each year. In addition, Volkswagen has just announced the construction of a third electric vehicle plant in China, after those in Anting and Foshan, this time located in Anhui province.
