The market of small urban vehicles in France
The French market for small urban vehicles without a license has fallen significantly in recent years, from 40,000 units in the 1990s to 20,000 units in 2021. But it could rebound again due to several factors, in particular the increase in the price of new and second-hand cars, rising fuel prices and growing traffic struggle in cities. The market has thus grown by 15% in 2021 compared to 2020. For several years now, we have seen a younger customer base than formerly used mainly by seniors.

The European small urban vehicles market is mainly French. As a result, most producers in this market are French. The two largest are Aixam and Ligier, which represent more than 70% of total sales. Ligier has two brands (Ligier and Microcar) whose positioning is different. Chatenet, for its part, has a more upscale positioning (average selling price of 15,000 euros compared to 12,000 to 13,000 euros for the other brands).

Major carmakers such as Renault and Citroën are present in this market with the Twizy and the Ami. Citroën is now the second brand behind Aixam, having caused a notable revival of the microcar market, thanks to attractive prices.

We also note the arrival on this market of Chinese brands which offer lower prices and which could see their market share increase during this decade, especially since the market for small urban vehicles is in the process of moving to battery electric, which may increase the average price of the models offered by French carmakers.
