China purchased 2.1 million PHEVs over 10 months 2023
- Over the first 10 months of 2023, the world purchased more than 3.5 million plug-in hybrid passenger cars (PHEV), including 3.1 million in China, Europe and the United States alone. As for plug-in hybrid light utility vehicles, they are still very marginal.
- Regarding plug-in hybrid passenger cars, China purchased 2.1 million in the first 10 months of 2023 compared to 1.2 million in the first 10 months of 2022 and 430 000 in the first 10 months of 2021. PHEVs represent 10% of the Chinese passenger car market this year compared to 6.5% in 2022 and 3% in 2021. China is the world's leading PHEV market in 2023, representing 60% of global PHEV sales this year.
- Europe (EU + UK + Norway + Switzerland) purchased 800 000 PHEVs over the first 10 months of 2023, compared to 800 000 over the first 10 months of 2022 and 850 000 over the first 10 months of 2021. We have observed a stabilization of PHEV sales in this region since 2022 (while growth continues in China). PHEVs represent 7.5% of the European passenger car market this year compared to 9% in 2022 and 2021. The market share of PHEVs is decreasing in Europe.
- The United States, for its part, purchased 230 000 PHEVs over the first 10 months of 2023, compared to 150 000 over the first 10 months of 2022 and 130 000 over the first 10 months of 2021. PHEVs represent 1.8% of the US market this year compared to 1.4% in 2022 and 1.1% in 2021.
