Volkswagen Group achieves record sales in 2018
The Volkswagen group (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, MAN, Scania) broke its world sales record in 2018, with a volume of 10.83 million vehicles, an increase of 0.9% compared to 2017. The breakdown of the group's top five brands is as follows: 6,244,900 Volkswagen (+0.2%), 1,812,500 Audi (-3.5%), 1,253,700 Skoda (+4.4%), 517,600 Seat (+10.5%) and 256,300 Porsche (+4%).

The Volkswagen group remained the world's leading manufacturer, including heavy goods vehicles ( PC+LCV+HD), while Renault-Nissan remains the world's leading manufacturer of light vehicles (PC+LCV).

The volume achieved by the Volkswagen group in 2018 is in any case a performance because the group has suffered seriously from the upgrading to WLTP standards of the models newly marketed from September onwards. The manufacturer compensated with the launch of new SUVs, such as the VW T-Roc, Seat Arona and Skoda Karoq, which pushed up their growth. In 2019, the VW T-Cross and Skoda Kamiq will be launched.

The Volkswagen group's main markets in 2018 were Europe (40% of its worldwide sales) and China (39%), where the manufacturer’s sales grew (+0.5%) while the Chinese market as a whole fell (-2.8%). The group’s sales increased in Brazil (+30.4%), Russia (+19.8%), the United States (+2%) but declined in Mexico (-15.6%).

The Korean market (PC+LCV) grew by 1.1% in 2018
The Korean automotive market (PC+LCV) grew by 1.1% in 2018, to 1,813,051 units (compared to 1,793,256 units in 2017), one of the three best figures of the decade for this market. However, with the slowdown in global growth, the sales volume expected in 2019 is likely to be lower.

In 2018, the Korean market consisted of 44.5% sedans and 38.5% SUVs, confirming the decline in the influence of sedans and the strong and growing demand for SUVs, as elsewhere in the world.

Last year, the Hyundai-Kia group launched two successful B-segment SUVs, the Hyundai Kona and Kia Stonic, which are both locally and globally successful. At the end of the year, Hyundai launched the top-of-the-range Palisade SUV, which is mainly intended for the North American market. Imports of foreign vehicles now represent 17% of the Korean market (compared to 14.4% in 2017), whereas in the past it was one of the most reluctant markets for imports. Daimler and BMW are the two largest importers in Korea.

The Hyundai-Kia group remains by far the market leader in Korea, with a market share of 55.9%, ahead of Mahindra (Ssangyong; 6.0%), Renault-Nissan (Samsung; 5.4%), GM Korea (ex-Daewoo; 4.1%), Daimler (3.9%) and BMW (3.3%).  GM Korea has collapsed, losing half its market share in one year, which raises questions about its future.

USA sales distribution by model in 2018
The US market remained stable in 2018 (+0.5% compared to 2017). The top four manufacturers were GM (17.0%), Ford (14.3%), Toyota (14.0%) and Fiat-Chrysler (13.0%), which together accounted for nearly 60% of the market last year.

Concerning passenger cars, a category in the throes of collapse (only 31% of the US market), Japanese brands are in the top six places, including 2 for Toyota (Camry, Corolla), 2 for Honda (Civic, Accord) and 2 for Nissan (Sentra, Altima), which says a lot about the rout of American manufacturers (GM, Ford, Chrysler) in this category. Seventh place is occupied by a Korean car (Hyundai Elantra), and the Americans are only eighth, ninth and tenth (Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Cruze). The Tesla Model 3 was ranked 11th in its first year on the market.

As for light trucks, a category that is now at 69% of the US market, the three American manufacturers (Ford, GM, Chrysler) manage to keep the top three places, with the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram pickups. On the other hand, Japanese manufacturers have the top three places in the SUV category, including 1 for Toyota (RAV4), 1 for Honda (CRV) and 1 for Nissan (Snape). Chevrolet and Ford are behind with the Equinox, Escape and Explorer. The first minivan is only in the 20th spot : the Dodge Caravan, which is at the end of its life.

Inovev forecasts 50,000 new Honda Passports per year
Honda is relaunching the Passport name, abandoned in 2002, to designate a D-segment SUV, competing with Chevrolet Blazer, Ford Edge, Jeep Cherokee, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento or Nissan Snape. It is part of the Honda SUV range between the CRV and the Pilot, and will be marketed mainly in the United States.

This new SUV completes the Honda SUV line-up, which until now has included HRV, XRV, CRV and Pilot models manufactured largely in North America, the leading market for Honda SUVs.

In 2018, Honda produced nearly one million SUVs worldwide ( 20% of the manufacturer's production), including 800,000 in North America. Of these 800,000 units, 500,000 are CRVs, one of the best-selling SUVs in the world.

The new Honda Passport will try to attract a new clientele, more family oriented than the CRV.

The Passport takes over the platform of the Ridgeline pickup truck, renewed in 2014. It will also be produced in the same plant as the Ridgeline, i.e. at the American site in Lincoln, Alabama.

The new model is equipped with the  3.5-litre V6 petrol engine mounted on the Ridgeline pickup truck. Its dimensions are as follows: 4.84m long, 2.00m wide and 1.82m high.

Inovev forecasts a production volume of 50,000 units per year of the new Honda Passport.

China sales distribution by manufacturer and model in 2018
The Chinese market declined in 2018 for the first time in 30 years. It showed a decrease of 2.8% and even 4.1% for the passenger car category. Let us look in detail at the Chinese passenger car market.

Including vehicles produced in Joint Ventures (JV) by non-Chinese manufacturers, two manufacturers  account for one-third of the huge Chinese market, the Volkswagen and GM groups. The Geely group becomes the third largest manufacturer on this market in 2018, ahead of the Renault-Nissan, Honda, Toyota and Hyundai-Kia groups.

Which manufacturers have succeeded in increasing their sales and which have had their sales fall?

The largest increases were recorded by SAIC MG-Roewe (+32.2%), BYD (+23.5%), Geely (+21.8%), BMW (+20.6%) and Daimler (+14.9%). The largest decreases were recorded by Ford (-54.2%), PSA (-33.0%) and Dongfeng (-26.8%).

Chinese manufacturers now  account for 42% of sales on the Chinese market, up from previous years, while Germans  make up 22%, Japanese 12.5%, Americans 11%, French 7.5% and Koreans 5%. Sedans remain in  majority on the Chinese passenger car market (41% of sales), but SUVs  are now at 36% of the market, and have been growing steadily for several years. By model, the Nissan Sylphy dislodged theWulingHongguang minivan from its decade-long  first place . Volkswagen had  four models in the Top 10 (Lavida, Jetta, Sagitar, Tiguan).
