Imports to Japan could reach 5% market share
- The Japanese “cruise” market is around 4.2 million vehicles per year (to be compared to the “cruise” French market which is around 2 million vehicles per year).
- Imports of Japanese vehicles have always been very low compared to the overall market (between 4% and 6% of the market between 2000 and 2011) and compared to other major markets, such as Europe or the USA.
- It is to be noted that in Asia, traditionally imports remain very low (see China and Korea).
- Nevertheless , since 2011, we can see a minor increase of imports to Japan, after a net decrease between 2007 and 2009. In 2012, they could again exceed 5% of the market. However, it is two times less than in Korea.
- Two-thirds of these imports come from German brands (BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche), which will represent in 2012 a sales volume of approximately 160,000 units.
