- The Korean carmaker Ssangyong achieved in 2013 its best sales volume since 2002. This manufacturer created in 1954 and located in Korea is specialized in SUVs. It was purchased in 2004 by the Chinese SAIC group before being made bankrupt in 2009 following the financial crisis of 2008. SAIC did not wish to pursue its control over Ssangyong that lasted for five years.
- Ssangyong that has been looking for a buyer since 2009, was bought in 2011 by the Indian Mahindra group that now possesses 70% of Ssangyong, The Indian manufacture was also a manufacturer specialized in SUVs. It accelerated the launch of the new Korando compact model (segment C), which extended the range downwards and modernized the image of the Korean manufacturer.
- Against all odds, but thanks to the the help of Mahindra that permitted Ssangyong to benefit from its own network and its own expertise (Ssangyong has been marketed in India since 2012),the Korean SUV brand was launched and has achieved in 2013 its bestselling record in ten years, benefitting from the worldwide success of SUVs.
- Mahindra and Ssangyong are complementary both in terms of models and in terms of geographical presence, Mahindra is present mainly in India and Ssangyong is mainly present in Korea and Russia.
- Ssangyong’s future now rests on the new Korando, a model that fits into the larger market of compact SUVs (segment B and C), former Ssangyong models were indeed often offset compared the demand.
