The European market of hybrid vehicles (HEV) in 2016

The European market of HEVs (Hybrid Electric Vehicles) has been declining for several years
(in the same way as the US market has), probably because part of potential customers turned directly toward PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) or BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles).

While in 2015 the market of electric vehicles (BEVs +  PHEV) in Europe totaled 189,000 units (+ 80% compared to 2014) and it is likely to reach 227,000 units in 2016 (+ 20% compared to 2015), the market of HEVs  fell 3% in 2015 and 2% in 2016.
It will barely exceed 200 000 units in 2016 against 220,000 in 2014.

Thus in 2016, for the first time, the sales volume of electric vehicles (BEVs + PHEVs) will exceed that of HEVs.
The arrival of the new Hyundai Ioniq and Kia Niro onto the market could however reverse the trend in 2017.

The European market of HEVs is dominated by the Toyota group, with 95% of sales in 2016.
The strategy of the Japanese group for Europe was indeed to promote at maximum this type of engine, rather than rely on diesel vehicles, PHEVs or BEVs. Three Toyota  cars sold in Europe are now equipped with a hybrid engine.
The most popular models are the
Yaris and Auris, which represent 60% of hybrid sales in Europe.
