- It is interesting to observe the successive transfers of production of the Opel Astra in Europe from 2005 to today ,and its scheduled transfers until 2021, the date of the launch of the next generation Astra.
- The Opel Astra is the successor of the Opel Kadett(C segment sedan ) which was manufactured exclusively on the German site of Bochum, purpose built for its production . In 1991, the Astra was produced in Germany (Bochum), Belgium (Antwerp) and the United Kingdom (Ellesmere). As of 2009, the Astra was also produced in Poland (Gliwice). Opel's decline in the European continent has led to a significant decline in Astra's sales since 1999.
- From 700,000 units in 1999,Astra's sales fell to 500,000 in 2005 and 300,000 In 2009 and 235,000 in 2014. In 2016, Astra's production rose to 300,000 units, the level for 2009, but we are still far from the figures for 1999 or 2005.
- As a result, production on the Antwerp site ceased in 2010 (which led to the closure of the plant) and Bochum in 2014 (which also led to the closure of the plant). The British site of Ellesmere continued its activity but the management of Opel has already scheduled its closure for 2021. The Polish site of Gliwice will remain the only site to make this model as of the next generation Astra scheduled for 2021. In conclusion, the Opel Astra is now produced on a single site, like the Opel Kadett in its time.
