World Market for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Rechargeable Hybrids (HREV) in 2016
- In 2016, the market for battery-powered electric vehicles (PC + LCV) and hybrid rechargeable batteries (HREV) worldwide grew by almost 39% to 930,000 units, compared to 670,000 units in 2015 and 400,000 units in 2014.
- In 2016 507,000 units were sold in China (+ 53% compared to 2015), 223,000 for Europe (+ 18%), 159,000 for the USA (+ 38%) and 22,500 for Japan (stagnating).
- Of the 930,000 worldwide sales in 2016, the market for 100% electric vehicles accounts for two thirds, while the market for plug-in hybrid vehicles accounts for one-third.
- By brand, BYD dominates the market with 102,500 sales, ahead of Tesla (76,000), BMW (62,000), Nissan (56,500), BAIC (46,500), Volkswagen (37,500), Zotye (37,000), Chevrolet (32,000), Mitsubishi (32,000) and Renault (30,000). These ten brands alone account for 55% of sales of rechargeable electric and hybrid vehicles worldwide.
- The ten best selling models are: Nissan Leaf (51,852 units), Tesla Model S (50,944), BYD Tang (31,405), Chevrolet Volt (28,296), Mitsubishi Outlander (27,322), BMW i3(25,943), Tesla Model X (25,299), Renault Zoe (22,009), BYD Qin (21,868) and BYD e6 (20,610). These ten models account for 33% of sales of rechargeable electric and hybrid vehicles worldwide.
