BYD to set up an assembly plant in Morocco
The Chinese manufacturer BYD, specialized in the design and marketing of electric cars (it is one of the  world’s first three manufacturers of electric cars), announced that it was going to build an assembly plant for this type of vehicle in Morocco, near Tangiers. After Renault (starting in 2012) and PSA (starting in 2018), BYD is the third car manufacturer to set up production in this country. BYD's plant is expected to start up in 2020 and commercialize its electric cars on both the European and African markets. BYD preferred this option rather than exporting its models from China.

BYD is an electric car pioneer, having marketed its first model in 2008 and will sell nearly 100,000 cars of this type in 2017, which is 13% of the global market share of 100% electric cars and 30% share Chinese market 100% electric cars. In the European market, where BYD is currently absent, it will probably take several years for the brand to become known and sell its models in number, especially as European manufacturers will launch a multitude of new electric models in the world in years 2020-2025.

The best niche for BYD to experience relative success here would be to occupy the low cost category of the 100% electric car market, which would explain the choice of a production site with low labor costs.
