VW and Ford groups form a strategic alliance
The Volkswagen and Ford groups have announced that they will form a strategic alliance without cross-shareholding, that will maintain the independence of the two groups. It will not be a merger of the Daimler and Chrysler group type in 1998 nor an alliance of the Renault and Nissan group type in 1999, but an alliance of another type that will design and produce common vehicles.

The joint projects will concern light commercial vehicles, and electric vehicles:

1. the future VW Transporter and Ford Transit Custom will share common platforms (Ford as prime contractor).
2. the future VW Caddy and Ford Connect/Courier will share common platforms (VW as prime contractor).
3. the future VW Amarok and Ford Ranger pickup trucks will share common platforms (Ford as prime contractor).
4. the future electric vehicles VW and Ford will share common engines (VW as prime contractor).

This agreement will significantly increase the volume of VW electric motors that will be installed under the hoods of the VW and Ford models. VW has also announced the construction of a second plant in the United States, in addition to the one it has in Chattanooga, which will be dedicated to the production of electric vehicles for the local market from 2022 onwards.

This agreement will also allow Volkswagen and Ford to share their plants.
