The top 20 models imported in the USA in 2019
In 2019, the US market represented 17,048,984 passenger cars (down 1.6% compared to 2018) and imports represented 7,453,645 units, or 44% of total registrations. Inovev's definition of passenger cars includes sedans, coupes, convertibles, MPVs and SUVs, while the US definition includes MPVs and SUVs in the light truck category.

With SUVs representing 48% of the US market in 2019, it is interesting to note that these models represent a larger share in imports. Indeed, SUVs account for 52% of total imports while sedans only represent 31%. The others are pick-ups (12%), MPVs (3%) and vans (2%). US imports include those from Mexico and Canada, which are primarily production sites for GM, Ford and FCA.

It is to be noted that of the first twenty models imported to the USA, twelve are SUVs, while there are only eight sedans. On the other hand, the most imported car in the USA is by far the Nissan Sentra (compact or D-segment sedan) which alone accounts for 6.5% of total Chinese imports. It is produced in Mexican plant.

Vehicles imported to the US are mostly from Mexico (38%), Canada (23%), Japan (14%) and Europe (14%). Imports from Europe are exclusively Premium brand models, unlike those from Japan, Mexico and Canada.
