The Belgian market is down 30.3% in 2021 compared to 2019
The Belgian automotive market (passenger cars) remained at a very low level in 2021 compared to 2019 (-30.3%), a level which is even lower than that of 2020 (-11.2%). In total, Belgium registered 383,123 passenger cars last year, compared to 431,491 in 2020 and 550,003 in 2019. This is the lowest figure recorded for several decades.

The reasons given for this very low level of registrations in 2021 relate to the lack of supply of the semiconductors that automakers need to make their cars marketable.

But it could be that the sharp increase in the average price of cars as well as a wait-and-see attitude from customers on electric vehicles may slow down purchases and encourage potential customers to keep their vehicles longer.

The classification by brand shows that BMW becomes the market leader for the first time, with 38,962 units, ahead of Volkswagen (34,349 units), Peugeot (28,479 units), Audi (28,016 units) and Mercedes (27,525 units). As in Germany, the Premium brands enjoy a comfortable position here.

By groups, Volkswagen is the Belgian market leader in 2021 (89,331 units), ahead of Stellantis (77,467 units), BMW (45,911 units), Renault-Nissan (43,349 units), Daimler (27,689 units) and Hyundai- Kia (27,304 units).

The best-selling models were the Volvo XC40 (8,512 units), the Hyundai Tucson (6,767 units), the BMW X1 (6,374 units). Belgium is one of the few countries where the three best sellers are SUVs.
