Is the number of models on the European market decreasing?
Between 2015 and 2022, 121 new car models were released. During the same period, 152 car models were withdrawn from the market. This means that between 2015 and 2022 the choice has been reduced by 31 car models. By group, Mercedes launched the most new models over this period, with 9 vehicles, followed by Toyota and VW (8 each), Ford (6) and Hyundai (5). The latter two discontinued more models than they put new ones on the market. Citroën and Peugeot are the manufacturers that have discontinued the largest number of vehicle models (9), although we note that at Peugeot no new model has been launched since 2015, with the exception of those that have replaced by new generations. Fiat and Opel, like Hyundai, discontinued 8 models, followed by Toyota with 7 discontinued vehicles.

There is a market shift from sedans to SUVs, as 30 sedans were produced and 74 sedans were discontinued during the period. At the same time, 73 SUVs were released and 26 models were discontinued. The end of multi-seat vehicles (MPVs) is also evident. If only 3 new MVPs were put on the market between 2015 and 2022, 23 MVP models were discontinued at the same time. 48 new thermal engine models while, at the same time, 129 models have been abandoned, the end is looming. Hybrid vehicles do not seem to have succeeded in imposing themselves against 100% electric vehicles. 48 BEVs appeared on the market while 8 models were discontinued. HEV, 8 new models were discontinued and for PHEVs, 16 new models were launched, while 3 models were discontinued.

It is obvious that the European market has become more compact, especially in the period between 2015 and 2019. After 2019, we note the appearance of new BEV models. In the future, generalist manufacturers will abandon more models to become more profitable. But with the evolution of the environment and the legislation, the combustion engine models will be abandoned while new alternative energy models will appear.
