Sales of BEV and PHEV in Europe (29 countries) in 2022
Sales of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) reached 1,575,079 units in Europe in 2022 (+29.3% compared to 2021) including 1,533,887 in the 17 Western European countries (including UK, Switzerland and Norway) and 41,192 in the 12 countries of Eastern Europe. BEVs represent a share of 14% of the total Europe 29 market. Western Europe registered 15.1% of BEVs while Eastern Europe only bought 3.6%. The gap therefore remains very significant between the countries of Western Europe and those of Eastern Europe. However, the increase of BEV sales reaches 51% in Eastern Europe in 2022, compared to 29% in Western Europe. The gap remains also wide between the countries of the North and the countries of the South (Spain: 4%; Italy: 4%; Greece: 3%).

Sales of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) reached 1,013,827 units in Europe in 2022, which represents a drop of 3% compared to 2021, proof that this type of engine is starting to be less attractive. However, future Euro VII regulations could once again favour sales of PHEVs. With 9% of car sales in Europe in 2022, PHEVs are selling as much as Full-HEVs.

Sales of Mild-Hybrid Electric Vehicles (MHEV) accounted for 16% of car sales in Europe in 2022. This is more than sales of diesel cars which fell to 15% of the European market last year.

Petrol car sales still account for the largest share of the European market in 2022, with 37% of sales. Total sales of thermal cars (petrol + diesel) therefore still represent the majority of sales (52%) in 2022, while the European Commission's objective is for this total to fall to 0% in twelve years.
