The B-segment is the one that has increased the most in weight in Europe
If we take into account an index of 100 in the year 2000 as a reference, what is the increase in the average weight and dimensions of cars produced in Europe between 2000 and 2022?

The weight of cars produced in Europe is the parameter that has increased the most with an index that has increased from 100 to 120 in 2022, an increase of 20%. The dimensions (length, width, height) increased at the same time by only 5%, the curve of the lengths, widths and heights being parallel and quite close.

To reach an index of 120 as for the weights, the average length of the cars would have had to increase to 4.99 m in 2022, which is far from being the case and fortunately we would say.

The weight index increased more than the size index due to the growing influence of SUVs (40% of production in Europe) and battery electric, full hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles (25% of production in Europe).

By segment, the weight index reveals a few lessons. It is B-segment that has increased the most (index 126 in 2022), while C, D, E segments reach an index of 118-119, but the value of their index has stabilized for ten years (around 118-119). A-Segment, on the contrary, has increased significantly over the past ten years (it has gone from 107 to 118 in 10 years). As for the F-segment, its index, which had reached 110 in 2005, remained stable until 2015 before falling to 107 in 2022.
