The number of Full-HEVs in Europe, China, the USA and Japan in 2024
The volume of HEVs sold worldwide in 2024 approaches 5 million units for the first time, at 4,873,549, up 17.7% compared to 2023 , thanks to increasing demand in all regions. Let’s remind that in 2015, the volume of HEVs sold worldwide did not exceed 1,437,000 units, before gradually reaching 1,974,000 units in 2017, 2,193,000 in 2019, 2,817,000 in 2021 and 4,140,000 in 2023.

In this HEV market, Japan remains the world's leading market in 2024, as in previous years, with 1,292,633 sales in 2024, compared to 1,262,277 in 2023 and 905,968 in 2022. It explains why battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) do not succeed in Japan. It will be all the more difficult to switch the volume from HEVs to BEVs and PHEVs, as the tradition has been anchored for several decades.

The USA is in second place behind Japan , with 1,538,745 HEVs sold in 2024, compared to 1,175,459 in 2023 and 758,120 in 2022. In 2024, the market share of HEVs sold in the USA reaches 9.6% compared to 7.6% in 2023 and 5.4% in 2022.

Europe is in third place behind Japan and the USA , with 1,210,626 HEVs sold in 2024, compared to 948,745 in 2023 and 828,333 in 2022. As a result, the HEV market share in Europe reaches 9.3% in 2024 compared to 7.4% in 2023 and 7.3% in 2022.

China remains a minor player in the HEV market, with 831,545 sales in 2024 compared to 754,242 in 2023 and 748,202 in 2022. The HEV sales growth in China is low. In 2024, the market share of HEVs sold in China thus remains stable at 3% of the market.
