The 25 most produced passenger cars in China: BYD and Tesla will dominate
- The figures for models produced in China in 2024 show a dominant position for the BYD and Tesla brands, since the Chinese carmaker BYD places 11 of its models in the Top 25, including 6 in the Top 10. Tesla, for its part, places 2 of its models in the Top 5, including the Model Y in first place (as in 2023), but down 14% compared to 2023, and the Model 3 in fifth place, up 20% thanks to its facelifting carried out in 2024. However, the production increase of the Model 3 could not compensate for the decrease of the Model Y, the balance being negative by 31,000 sales.
- BYD's various models are crushing the competition, notably with the successful launch of the Qin L (D-segment sedan, 284,000 sales), Seal 06 (D-segment sedan, 236,000 sales), Song L (D-segment SUV, 204,000 sales) as well as the strong growth (+71%) of the Seagull (B-segment sedan, 480,000 sales). In addition, the position of Song Plus (D-segment SUV, 512,000 sales), Qin Plus (D-segment sedan, 443,000 sales) and Yuan Plus/ Atto 3 (C-segment SUV, 310,000 sales) remain solid in 2nd, 4th and 6th. Former Chinese market leader Volkswagen now has only three models in the Top 25 : Lavida (9th), Passat (13th), Sagitar (15th). Chery and Geely each have one of their models in 7th and 11th place respectively (Tiggo 7 and Xing Yue L ). These are C and D segment SUVs.
- Note that the most produced model in China in 2022, the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, is in 19th place in 2024.
- A segment analysis shows that the D segment is the vast majority of Chinese automobile production (54% of the total), particularly pushed by the strong influence of BYD, which produces 70% of its D-segment vehicles. The C segment represents 29% of all Chinese production, well ahead of the lower A (4%) and B (5%) segments. China therefore produces mainly mid-size cars and very few small cars.
