German builders have doubled their production abroad in the last 10 years
The three German car groups Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW doubled their volume of production abroad (achieved outside Germany) in twelve years (from 2007 to 2017).

Foreign production grew from 5.4 million units in 2007 to 10.8 million in 2017, while production in Germany went from 4.7 million to 5.3 million in the same period, an increase of only 12.8%.

While the production volume of the three German groups in Germany in 2005 was comparable to that outside Germany, the situation is very different in 2017, as production in Germany is now only half that produced outside Germany. Germany (5.3 million compared to 10.8 million).

It seems that there was a relocation of the production of German manufacturers in the 2000s. In fact, this was only partial since almost half of the production outside Germany was made in China, where the produced vehicles are sold locally. In this case, we can not really talk about relocation but rather localization.

Production in Russia is based on the same analysis, since the vehicles produced are sold in the country. In the United States as well, a majority of the cars produced are sold domestically . German groups still have room to relocate their production, especially Daimler and BMW which have relocated two times less than Volkswagen.
