Tesla produced 364,236 electric cars in 2019
The Californian electric car maker Tesla produced 364,236 vehicles at its Fremont plant in 2019, compared to 254,530 units in 2018 (representing a 43% year-over-year increase), thereby strengthening its position of worldwide electric carmaker leader.

This strong increase is due to the strong progress of the Model 3 sedan (segment D) which was produced in 300,000 units last year, despite a difficult start of production. Today, the plant releases 35,000 Model 3 every month.

The carmaker's objectives, which had been set for 350,000 vehicles produced in 2019, were therefore reached, or even slightly exceeded, thanks to the success of the Model 3 sedan observed in many countries (this model has become number 1 in sales in Norway and in the Netherlands for example).

The carmaker has announced its 2020 targets set at 500,000 sales, thanks to the marketing of the Model Y (a D-segment SUV closely derived from the Model 3) and the recently unveiled pickup Model X, as well as the start of production of the Chinese plant which will strengthen Tesla's footprint in China. For Inovev, these objectives seem realistic taking into account these new models planned for 2020. It is to remind that the Chinese Tesla plant located in Shanghai will be able to produce up to 200,000 electric cars per year from this year, which could be achieved in the 2 to 3 coming years.

The Peugeot 3008 remained the most produced car in France in 2019
The Peugeot 3008 remained the most produced car in France in 2019, for the second consecutive year. Over the past 12 months, 245,932 units of this C segment SUV have been produced at the Sochaux plant, which represents a 4.8% drop in volume compared to 2018.

The 3008 remains on a high trend, however, but is approaching its mid-life restyling which is planned for 2020, the model having to be replaced in 2023. In addition, it has been directly challenged by the new Citroën C5 Aircross which is located on the same market and which is sold at a similar price. The C5 Aircross, which shares platform and engines with the 3008, sold more than 80,000 units for its first year of commercialization.

Peugeot's C segment SUV is ahead of the Toyota Yaris (224,000 units produced in 2019), which suffered a 10% drop in production last year. This result are not the consequence of lower sales in Europe (the sales are stable in 2019) but are due to the decision of Toyota to stop the exportation to the United States. The Toyota Yaris marketed in North America is now produced in Mexico, and based on the Mazda 2.

For 2020, the situation is uncertain because the Peugeot 3008 will benefit from a mid-life restyling, while the Toyota Yaris will start a new career with a completely redesigned body. The Peugeot 2008 (segment B SUV) on the other hand will no longer appear on this graph since this model is transferred to Spain.

The Russian market (PC + LUV) fell by 2.3% in 2019
The Russian automotive market (PC + LUV) declined by 2.3% in 2019, with a volume of 1.76 million units, after two years of growth (1.6 million in 2017 and 1.8 million in 2018 ). The market rebound was therefore abruptly interrupted in 2019, and forecasts for a market of two million units could not be realized.

According to the Russian Dealers Association (RAD), sales of new cars in Russia could decline further in 2020 by 8%, while the second-hand market should remain stable at 5.4 million units. For its part, the AEB organization forecasts a decrease of 2%. Inovev expects a 3.5% drop in 2020 to 1.7 million units.

In this context, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi group (owner of the Russian Autovaz) remains by far the leading carmaker in Russia, with a market share of 36% (including 20.5% for the Lada brand, 8.2% for the Renault brand and 5% for the Nissan brand), ahead of the Hyundai-Kia group (23%), the Volkswagen group (12.5%) and the Toyota group (7.2%).

Note that Ford is no longer present on the Russian market since December 31, 2019, following the path of GM group which withdrew from this market in 2016.

The Japanese market (PC + LUV) fell by 1.5% in 2019
The Japanese car market (PC+LUV) declined by 1.5% in 2019, which is almost the same level as in 2017, at 5.2 million units.
Since
2012, this market has been stable, as it is essentially based on the renewal of the existing fleet. Since then, the Japanese market has fluctuated between 5 million and 5.4 million.

It was during the 1990s that the Japanese market fell sharply from 7 million units (figure recorded between 1989 and 1991) to less than 6 million and has never returned to these high levels since.

This stagnation has structural reasons (aging of the population, declining demography, strong development of train transportation in city and between cities, very high density in the cities, decreasing interest of the young generations around the car) but also economical reasons (sluggish economic growth vis-a-vis the rise of the China and Korea).

The distribution of the Japanese market in 2019 remains in any case close to the previous years, which means a strong domination of the Toyota group (Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu) with 46% of the market share, far ahead of Honda (14%), Suzuki (14%), Nissan (11%), Mazda (4%), Subaru (3%) and Mitsubishi (2%). Imports remain stable at 6% of the market. For 2020, Inovev forecasts the Japanese market to fall by around 2%, to around 5.1 million units.

Inovev forecasts 150,000 units per year of the new Seat Leon
After successively launching three SUVs from different segments (Arona from B segment, Ateca from C segment , Tarraco from D segment) which meet the growing demand for SUVs all over Europe and even worldwide, the Spanish carmaker Seat (a subsidiary of the group Volkswagen) has just unveiled the fourth generation of its C segment sedan, the Leon.

The new model takes on the body style of the previous generation, with its six side windows, but the whole takes on certain stylistic codes of the Ateca. Designed on the Volkswagen group’s MQB Evo platform, the new Leon is 9 cm longer than the old one (4.37m) and its wheelbase increases by 5 cm (2.67m) which improves cabin space.

The new Leon will have to compete with the Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia, Ford Focus, Opel Astra, Renault Mégane, Peugeot 308, Hyundai i30 and Kia Ceed mainly. It will be produced on the Spanish site of Martorell as previously. Inovev forecasts a volume of 150,000 units per year, slightly less than the volumes produced between 2014 and 2018, a period when the Seat SUVs had not yet been successful. Today, sedans are less popular with customers.

The Leon will be equipped with the following engines: a 3-cylinder petrol 1.0 TSI 90hp and 100hp, a 4-cylinder petrol 1.5 TSI of 130hp and 150hp, a 4-cylinder petrol 2.0 TSI of 190hp, a 4-cylinder diesel 2.0 TDI of 115hp and 150hp. A plug-in hybrid version of 200hp based on 1.4 TSI will be available later. The new Leon will be presented at the Geneva Motor Show next March for sales debut in April. Its Sports tourer station wagon version will be marketed in June.
